As of Tuesday morning, more than 4,000 “clunkers” had been traded in nationwide for cleaner, more fuel-efficient cars and trucks, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Since Friday, Gurley Leep in Mishawaka reported more than 50 transactions as part of the program. Jordan Automotive Group expected to complete close to 40.

“It's just been overwhelming here the last few days," said Bob Hayden, Vice President at Jordan.

The billion-dollar federal program allows people to trade in their older gas guzzlers and get $3,500 to $4,500 in credit toward the purchase of a new, more fuel-efficient vehicle. It’s designed to help the environment, but also energize the economy and boost ailing auto sales.
